Chapter Fifteen

Dana got three hours of sleep, which actually surprised her. Her first call that morning was to Shirley Pacheco. Benny had given her a list of people to contact if she ever needed help with legal matters, if he wasn’t around or for parts of the legal system out of his wheelhouse like criminal law—Benny was a real estate attorney. He didn’t do criminal law work—so months ago, when Dana got into a legal jam and Picado was threatening her with preventive detention, Benny had told her that if she was picked up, she needed to call Shirley Pacheco, one of the best criminal defense lawyers in the country. The receptionist put Dana through to Shirley.

“Good morning, Dana. I was actually getting ready to call you,” Pacheco said.

“About Benny, I assume?”

“That’s right. He called me as soon as they arrested him. I’ve taken his case and I’m working right now to get him out of holding.”

“That’s wonderful. Benny told me you’re the best criminal lawyer in the country,” Dana said, feeling buoyed with hope for the first time since Beatrice’s call.

“Rest assured, I’ll be providing the best defense I can offer. He wanted me to call you to assure you that he’s doing okay under the circumstances. They’re limiting his phone access. But he was concerned, knowing you would be worried sick by now.”

Dana’s heart melted. He was sitting in jail and was concerned about her wellbeing.

“What is going on, Shirley?”

“Benny told me I could talk to you freely, so I’ll share what I know so far. Bear in mind, I’m just digging my heels into the case this morning, but the police claim to have enough evidence to prove that Benny murdered Terri Kaminski.”

Dana almost dropped her phone. “What? That’s ridiculous.”

“Right now there isn’t a court order, so they can only hold him for another twelve hours. I need to see what this evidence is so I can start chipping away at it so that the judge won’t grant the order to keep Benny in jail beyond the twenty-four-hour window. I’ll keep you posted.”

“Of course, thank you. I’ll let you get to work.”

“One thing, Dana. What do you know about Burt Kaminski?”

“Not much. I just know he’s married to Terri. I only met them once a couple of days ago in my bookstore. But he didn’t say much. He seemed to be henpecked by Terri.”

“Well, he’s the star witness against Benny.”

For the second time in a few minutes, Dana almost dropped her phone on the floor. This case was getting more bizarre by the second.

“What would Burt have on Benny about anything?” Dana asked.

“I don’t know, but I’m going to find out.”

Dana’s next call was to Cheyenne.

“Hi, Dana, I was meaning to call you. I’m so sorry about Benny’s arrest.”

“How on earth do you know about that already?” It seemed everyone knew Benny had been arrested but her.

“I have a source in the police.”

“You do? What do you know?”

“You’re not going to like it,” Cheyenne said, sounding sheepish.

“Please tell me what you know.
